What moved

Ethiopia's government and Tigray accuse each other of starting a war that ended four years ago

Ethiopia has 132.1 million people — 1.62% of everyone alive, about one person in every 62 (World Bank). On Wednesday its government and the party that runs the northern region of Tigray each said the other had launched an offensive, and forces loyal to that party took control of the region's airports (BBC).

The last war between them ran from 2020 to 2022. The African Union's mediator estimated that some 600,000 people died in it, as the fighting pushed the region toward famine (BBC; The Standard, Kenya, citing AFP). It ended with an agreement signed in Pretoria in November 2022, and both sides have spent months accusing each other of breaking it. In May the Tigray People's Liberation Front took the regional government back from the interim administration that agreement had set up, and Ethiopia's military has since carried out several drone strikes on Tigrayan forces, according to conflict-event data cited by Reuters (Daily Maverick, citing Reuters). On Sunday the TPLF announced an alliance with six other armed groups whose declared aim is to remove the government in Addis Ababa (BBC).

Then came Wednesday. Getachew Reda, a cabinet minister and adviser to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, said Tigrayan fighters had taken federally administered airports and begun offensives in the neighbouring Afar and Amhara regions. The Tigray government said its forces had entered a "defensive war" after federal bombardment on Tuesday "involving aircraft, drones, and artillery" — a claim AFP could not verify (The Standard, citing AFP). Two local sources told Reuters that Tigrayan forces had taken the airport in Mekelle, the regional capital, from federal police overnight. Ethiopian Airlines halted flights to Mekelle, Shire and Axum "due to the current situation in Tigray region" (Daily Maverick, citing Reuters).

Fighting was reported in Afar, at Abala on the border with Tigray and at Erebti about 100 kilometres further in. An aid worker in the region told AFP: "We are expecting it to expand. We just sent a truck with food to help the people displaced." A former senior TPLF official said the group held six towns in Afar and that federal forces were "fast-retreating"; AFP could not confirm that either (Euronews, citing AFP; The Standard).

Reuters described the day as shattering the Pretoria agreement, and placed it against a backdrop that makes the Horn of Africa unusually combustible: deteriorating ties between Ethiopia and Eritrea, the civil war in neighbouring Sudan, and disputes over access to the Red Sea (The Straits Times, citing Reuters).

How this reached us. Three outlets carried it in our sources before grouping, against thirty-one across nine regions for the sentencing of a Hollywood producer the same day. That contrast is measured, not asserted; both are on the scorecard at the foot of this issue.

South Sudan's president dissolves the government three months before the country's first election

South Sudan has never held an election. It became independent in 2011, has postponed its first vote twice, and has 11.9 million people — about one in every 682 alive (World Bank). On Tuesday President Salva Kiir dissolved the transitional government, removed the country's five vice-presidents, and dissolved parliament and the national and state governments, three months before an election scheduled for 22 December (BBC).

The legal basis was an amendment to the elections law signed the day before, which removed the requirement that elections wait for a permanent constitution and a national census. The order, read on state broadcasting, installed a caretaker administration of 13 ministries and 10 state governors; Kiir remains president with full powers until an elected one is sworn in (The New Times, via AllAfrica; BBC).

Kiir, who has led the country since independence, is his party's candidate. No prominent figure has announced a challenge. The main opposition leader, Riek Machar — given the vice-presidency by the 2018 peace deal that ended five years of civil war between his forces and Kiir's — was sacked last year and charged with treason (BBC); he has been under house arrest in Juba since March 2025 (RFI). Last week Kiir dismissed the chairman of the elections commission without giving a reason (BBC).

Soldiers blocked access to ministries in Juba on the day of the announcement, and UN agencies asked staff to work from home (BBC). Kiir's own line, reported by RFI's correspondent in Juba, was that the peace agreement "has not collapsed" (RFI). Amnesty International's regional director, Tigere Chagutah, put the counter-view in a sentence: "The legitimacy of any election depends not only on whether it is held, but on whether people can exercise their rights freely, safely and equally" (Amnesty International).

Nepal's floods, a month on: the UN calls them a warning for the whole Himalayan range

On 26 August a section of glacier and rock roughly 200,000 square metres in area fell from Langtang Lirung mountain in Nepal, dropping about 1,400 metres into the valley below. It sent 110 million cubic metres of snow and ice downhill and set off flash floods on a scale researchers described as almost unprecedented (The Guardian). A government assessment describes a flood wave travelling at roughly 188 kilometres an hour, covering about 20 kilometres in seven or eight minutes (Kathmandu Post). It carried away some 70 bridges and buried 12 hydropower plants along the Trishuli River (NPR).

Our sources do not agree on the toll, and we are not choosing among them. The UN puts the dead at more than 1,200 (UN News); The Guardian at more than 1,300; NPR and Germany's DW at about 1,400; Nepal's disaster authority, as reported on Saturday, at 1,411 dead with 5,875 missing (Scroll.in); the government's own assessment at more than 1,400 dead and more than 6,000 missing (Kathmandu Post). Nepal's finance minister, Swarnim Wagle, has said he expects the final toll to reach 10,000 (Scroll.in). Against a population of 29.7 million — one person in every 275 alive (World Bank) — even the lowest figure is a national catastrophe.

This week the UN's project-services office, UNOPS, briefed reporters in Geneva. Its regional director, Sara Netzer, had just come from the valley: one community of some 400 homes and 1,200 people was "completely obliterated", homes had been carried up to 150 metres from where they stood, and the debris lies five to eight metres deep. "It looks like an apocalypse," she said. Her warning was the reason the story is here: the same thing could happen again, in Nepal or elsewhere in the Himalayas, because of climate change (UN News). The first scientific study of the collapse, from Imperial College London, found unusually warm conditions before it and concluded that global heating probably weakened the glacier (The Guardian).

Nepal has asked the UN-backed Loss and Damage Fund for $20 million. Its environment minister, Geeta Chaudhary, told DW: "We don't need sympathy. We need justice" (DW). The Asian Development Bank has cut its growth forecast for the country to 4.1% from 4.5% because of the floods (Kathmandu Post); the United States announced a further $31 million in recovery aid on Wednesday, taking its total past $36 million, and said about 70 of its own citizens remain unaccounted for (Kathmandu Post).

Trump meets Venezuela's acting president, while her predecessor sits in a Brooklyn jail and her rival is turned back at the border

Venezuela has 28.4 million people, one in every 287 alive (World Bank). On Tuesday evening in New York its acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, met President Trump for the first time since she took power in January, after US forces captured Nicolás Maduro and his wife in a military operation on 3 January (g1). The meeting was closed to the press, at the Lotte Palace hotel during a reception for leaders attending the UN General Assembly; Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, chief of staff Susie Wiles and adviser Stephen Miller attended, according to a White House source (BBC Mundo).

Rodríguez called it "a historic meeting" and said the two discussed cooperation in energy, mining and security; she thanked Washington for its help after Venezuela's June earthquakes and for backing the country's return to multilateral bodies (g1). The hotel is less than 15 kilometres from the Brooklyn jail where Maduro is held (BBC Mundo).

During the same hours, the opposition leader María Corina Machado tried three times to get back into Venezuela from Panama, by sea and by air, and failed — the latest of seven attempts since she left the country secretly by boat in December 2025, before travelling to Norway to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, according to her adviser Pedro Urruchurtu (BBC Mundo; g1). Her daughter accepted a leadership prize on her behalf at a hotel less than a kilometre from where Rodríguez met Trump (BBC Mundo).

Bloomberg's account, carried by The Japan Times, is the one that names the tension: Washington is drawing closer to the acting president and holding the country's most popular politician at arm's length, which Bloomberg says is "testing its stated commitment to a democratic transition in Venezuela" (The Japan Times, citing Bloomberg). We could read this story in Spanish and Portuguese from Brazil, Mexico and the BBC's Spanish service; in English it was carried by far fewer of our sources.

The slow story

Where a super El Niño will kill: a projection, country by country

This year's El Niño was declared in June and is on course to be the strongest on record (Dawn, citing AFP). On Wednesday the Climate Impact Lab at the University of Chicago published a projection of what that heat will cost in lives: 451,000 additional heat-related deaths worldwide between June 2026 and the end of February 2027, compared with an average year (Al Jazeera). Against 8.14 billion people alive (World Bank), that is a small share; against the way the deaths are distributed, it is not.

Indonesia's 19,300 is set against 283.5 million people; Australia's 260 against 27 million (World Bank; World Bank). The researchers project land temperatures 1.2°C above normal in the coming months and 44% more extremely hot days than in a normal year. Their method combined the relationship between temperature and excess deaths across 24,378 regions, adjusted for local climate and vulnerability, with long-range temperature forecasts, against a 1996 to 2025 baseline (Dawn, citing AFP). Confidence: it is a projection, not a count, and Al Jazeera notes the methodology has yet to be published in a peer-reviewed journal (Al Jazeera). The authors' own framing is that this El Niño delivers the temperatures climate change is expected to make normal about twenty years from now, before anyone has adapted to them (Nine).

The World Health Organization had said a day earlier that the same El Niño is "a significant public health threat" and a "risk multiplier", with heavy rain expected to favour cholera and the mosquitoes that carry malaria, dengue and chikungunya, and the worst effects falling where health systems are already weak (Dawn, citing AFP). And on Tuesday Hurricane Polo reached category 5 off Mexico's Pacific coast, with winds of 270 kilometres an hour — among the fastest-intensifying storms on record in that ocean — before weakening to category 4 overnight; Mexico's weather service warned of waves of three to four metres and of flooding in Guerrero, Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco (g1).

A ship is attacked in the strait everyone was negotiating over

Last week's issue covered Iran's offer to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the United States eased military pressure. This week a merchant ship was attacked there. The Cape Dao, a bulk carrier flagged in Antigua and Barbuda, was hit about 2.5 nautical miles off Oman's Musandam governorate on Wednesday; a fire broke out in the engine room, one crew member was killed and 27 were evacuated by Oman's navy (The Express Tribune, Pakistan).

The dead man was Suraj Yadav, a wiper from Deoria in Uttar Pradesh; 20 of the 28 crew were Indian, and the ship was sailing from Mina Saqr to India (Hindustan Times). India's foreign ministry condemned the attack and called for "free and unimpeded navigation" to be restored (The Hindu).

Our sources describe the weapon differently. An Indian seafarers' union told the Hindustan Times two torpedoes struck the port side; the UK's maritime trade office said an "unidentified projectile"; Oman said only that the vessel was "targeted" (Hindustan Times; The Express Tribune). Nobody has been named as responsible. The South China Morning Post's account of the wider situation: since the war began, Iran has sought to control the strait and has occasionally struck ships it says failed to coordinate with it, while the United States enforces a counter-blockade of Iranian ports and strikes ships it says refuse to comply (SCMP).

The Nigerian custody deaths scored well too and were held, because the two reports disagree on how many died and only four of our sources carried it; a thread is open so it is not lost. The attention-gap section that alternates with the slow story is not yet built, so this issue carries a data story in that slot instead.

How this issue was made

Researched and written by an AI system working to a published rubric, with every source linked. This is the first issue drawn from the rebuilt source registry: four layers — 108 newsrooms we chose and can vouch for, Google News editions for 50 countries in their own languages, 4 institutional bodies, and Wikipedia's cited current-events page as a cross-check. Together they produced 7,300 items in the window, 5,465 of them from the chosen newsrooms and 1,737 surfaced by Google's editions.
